COMMS 101

There's always a lot on the go at Fern - keep up with all the news by checking into the various communications channels available from the Principal's Office, School Council and our parent community. 

For many reasons, including available technology, subject matter and audience reach, you’ll see regular communications
coming to you from three streams.

 

Here’s a quick digest of the who, what, where, when and why of Fern Ave. PS communications!

PRINCIPAL'S OFFICE

Each week, the Principal and VP send out the Fern Focus email newsletter (sent via SchoolMessenger* to your email inbox) to update parents on important and upcoming school-related information.


Topics include celebrations and concerts, sports and clubs, lunch program, TDSB updates, student safety, holidays, and more. The Fern Focus also shares resources to help us navigate important topics related to the overall wellbeing of students.
 

The Principal's Office may also send out additional emails during the week as time-sensitive updates arise.

school council

The School Council shares info about the activities that raise funds to supplement classroom resources. 


Topics include fundraising efforts, volunteer/donation requests, extracurricular programs that enhance student wellbeing, and more. They may also include reminders about important topics shared by the Principal’s Office.


Communications are available via three channels:

  1. School Council website (you are here!): a repository of information shared by the Principal’s Office, staff and School Council. It’s updated as news comes in. It also includes useful items like parent handbooks, lunch calendars, TDSB links and more. 

  2. School Council newsletter: delivered mid-week, this email newsletter is a digest of the most recent School Council updates and is sent to over 600 subscribed parents (sign up here!)

  3. SchoolMessenger* updates: Sniff. It happens...Not everyone subscribes to the newsletter or checks the website regularly. To make sure noone is missing an important School Council update, we also send out weekly emails via SchoolMessenger* at the beginning of each week.

BETWEEN PARENTS

We get a lot covered in the school yard, but there are two other channels to watch out for as well:

  1. Class Reps: each class will have a parent rep who facilitates class-level communication, including class needs, teacher gifts, and reminders from School Council (e.g. fundraising initiatives and events).

  2. Facebook - Fern Ave. PS Parents: An informal members-only group created to connect parents, caregivers and family members of Fern Avenue P.S. It encourages the sharing of information, news and questions with other parents. 
    This group is parent-run and not affiliated with the school or the TDSB.    ​

* Messages sent through the SchoolMessenger platform from the Principal and School Council can only be distributed to the first two email addresses that were submitted by parents in the TDSB’s “Start of Year” forms and includes contacts for current registered students only. If you have a third parent or guardian who would like to receive information from the school, please contact Vera Ciric for help.​
