Looking Ahead: 2026–2027 School Council Elections

Next year will be an important transition year for Fern School Council.

The current Council leadership has reached the end of its term, which means Fern will need a new slate of volunteers to step forward and help lead School Council for the 2026–2027 school year.

We are officially seeking new leadership

School Council is stronger when we work together, and next year is a chance for new voices, fresh ideas, and an even stronger school community. We are looking for volunteers across the whole of council, but especially in Co-Chair, Treasurer, Events and Communications roles.

Elected Positions

The elected positions for the 2026–2027 school year are:

Co-Chair / Chair

The Co-Chairs or Chair helps guide School Council, support the school community, chair meetings, work with the principal and Council members, and help shape the direction of Council’s work for the year.

This role is a good fit for those who are organized, collaborative, comfortable communicating with families and staff, and interested in helping build a strong and welcoming school community.

It’s even more fun with a partner - consider buddying up with another Fern parent and running together!

Treasurer

The Treasurer oversees the School Council budget, manages financial records, tracks revenue and expenses, presents financial updates, and helps ensure transparency in all Council spending. The treasurer also helps out with payments during events.

This role is a good fit for someone who is organized, detail-oriented, and comfortable working with numbers, budgets, and basic financial tracking.

Volunteer and Committee Roles

All committees are looking for volunteers.

These roles are not elected in the same way as Chair/Co-Chair and Treasurer, but they are essential to making Council work.

Opportunities include:

Secretary

The Secretary takes meeting minutes, supports communication, and helps keep School Council organized.

Events

The Events Committee helps plan fun community events that bring Fern families together and raise funds for the school.

Communications

The Communications Committee helps keep the school community informed through newsletters, social media, our calendar, website updates, and other communication channels.

Additional Committees

We are also looking for volunteers interested in:

  • Equity & Inclusion

  • Wellness

  • Eco

  • Community Engagement

  • Arts

  • STEM

These committees are struck at the start of each year. They will not run if nobody puts their hand up to staff them.

Whether you run for an elected position, join a committee, or attend a meeting, your voice matters.

Election and Nomination Information

Families can find election information and nomination forms at:

Fern Forum: fernforum.ca

Important dates:

  • Nomination deadline: ~Sept 25th (14 days after the start of school year)

  • First Council meeting of 2026–2027 & Elections: Early Oct (30 days after start of the school year)

If you are a parent or guardian of a student at Fern, you are welcome to join the school council. If you are curious but not sure where you fit, please reach out. You do not need previous School Council experience, and you do not need to know everything before you start. You just need to care about the school community, be willing to collaborate, and have some time and energy to contribute.
